The goal of any fire suppression system is to detect fire as soon as it starts and immediately suppress it, preventing the fire from spreading. Heat and flames are detected, a trigger signals there is a fire, and the suppression system kicks into action suppressing the fire at the source. There are many types and sizes of fire suppression systems. The system design will vary based on the asset needing protection and the type of fire hazard. For example, a piece of ground support equipment at an airport would be treated differently than a server room.

Types of Fire Suppression Systems

There are numerous types of special hazard suppressions systems, each using a unique suppression agent. Special hazard suppression systems are optimized for different business environments and certain types of fire.

Special hazard suppression systems are organized into five main categories: dry chemical, clean agent, commercial kitchen, foam, and CO2.

In this article, we going to focus on the clean agent systems and the difference between them.

Environmental Impact

Those interested in the environmental impact of using clean agent fire suppression agents like FM-200™ and Novec™ 1230 can rest assured, knowing that both have zero ozone depletion potential (ODP).

However, they do differ when it comes to their global warming potential (GWP), or the amount of emitted greenhouse gas that is estimated to contribute to global warming each year. According to the National Fire Protection Association, Novec™ 1230 has a GWP of 1 while FM-200™ has a GWP of 3350. This means Novec™ 1230 is the more environmentally friendly choice.

FM-200 Phase down

As per the AIM Act, enacted by US Congress in late 2020 as part of the Consolidation Appropriations Act, FM-200 (HFC-227ea) is being phased down for environmental reasons since January 1st 2022.

Our partner (Siemens) has stopped supplying FM-200 solutions and has been providing the new alternative solution NOVEC1230 instead of FM-200.

This extinguishing agent has exactly the same extinguishing performance but a much better environmental footprint.

It is the latest generation of the chemical extinguishing agents.

Financial Impact:

Our research indicates that not only using FM-200 is harmful to the environment; the operational costs of FM-200 will also drastically increase as the consumables will be less available in the near future.

For example, some manufacturers have already shown increases of 500% on their pricelists for FM-200 systems starting January 2022 and expect it to reach 800%

The technical reason of this act is:

While HFCs indeed did not possess the ozone-depleting qualities of CFCs, they have come to be considered as potent greenhouse gases with high global warming potential.

HFCs was responsible for almost 20% of the man-made global warming.

To control production during this phasedown, the EPA will issue “allowances” to those organizations that a) produce or import HFCs and/or b) that use HFCs in one of the six approved applications:

• As a propellant in metered dose inhalers
• Defense spray propellant
• Manufacturing preformed polyurethane foam for marine use and trailer use
• For etching semiconductor material or wafers
• Mission-critical military end uses, such as armored vehicle engine and shipboard fire suppression systems
• On board aerospace fire suppression

A surge protection is an appliance designed to protect electrical devices from voltage spikes. It is also known as Surge arrester.

Why do we need to protect the surge with fuses?

The 3 phases lines and the neutral are wired directly to the load which is your UPS, while the surge protection is wired, as seen, parallel with respect to the load, towards the earth. That is, the 3 phase current passes directly to the load, not through the surge protection. Hence, the surge arrester or protector is then an open circuit from the earth …

If an electric surge (from lightning or from industrial switching) is passing to the load, on either one or on all the 3 phases lines and/or the neutral, the surge protection will react very quickly (less than 5 nanoseconds, a figure to compare with other surge protections, as seen in the data sheet “Novaris SDD3”) and will connect the relative line(s) and/or the neutral to the earth. By that, it will become normally closed to earth, thus discharging the electric surge to earth.

If the surge is less than 100 kAmps, the surge arrester will go back to its normal position of open circuit within 2 seconds. By that, if you had used the surge arrester for protecting your home, the lights will switch off however will be back within 2 seconds… confirming the surge arrester has performed correctly. The process occurs by cutting the inlet power for 2 seconds, grounding the lines and/or neutral to earth and getting back to normal …

In figure 2, the circuit breaker will isolate the load and the destroyed surge protection, thus blocking a second electric surge to pass by and destroy your UPS.

At some situations where the load ought to remain alive but the surge could not be replaced immediately … say at the TV/radio relay stations at the top of the mountains where there are no technicians at night. From statistics, they know that up to say 5 electric surges might pass by in one night … maybe 7 sets of surge protectors with relative fuses are installed in parallel. If one set is destroyed, the load will remain powered and still protected through 6 other sets of surge protectors with relative fuses.

Based on the situation of your project, you ought to decide to use fuses in parallel to isolate your UPS in case the surge protection is destroyed … or install the surge arrester behind a 3 x 50 Amps circuit breaker in series with your UPS.

A Surge Protection is like a neon lamp

It will protect electric surges of 10 kAmps for up to 10 times and then get destroyed with the 11^th electric surge. When as well, it will get destroyed with a single electric surge of above 100 kAmps.

What happens when a Surge Protection gets destroyed?

When the surge protection is destroyed, it is in a closed circuit to earth which is when the fuses installed in series with the surge protection are required, then the normal electricity of the premises will flow through the surge protection to earth. Hence, the surge protection will heat up soon and start burning from the normal electricity flowing through it to earth and set fire to the surrounding. Unless the fuses blow out to isolate the surge protection from the normal electricity lines … thus preventing the surge protection to burn and set fire around it!

But then if a second lower intensity electric surge arrives, it will destroy the load, that is your UPS and that is because the fuses had already blown out as the surge protection was destroyed from the earlier higher intensity electric surge!

In Conclusion

Evidently, the alarm output will trigger as soon as the surge protection is destroyed to alert the personnel of the premises. So, it is better to have an independent power source rather than the mains 220 vac. And it is also suggested to combine it to a fire alarm panel.

So far, the standards EN 54-5 and EN54-7 have been applicable for point detectors. They specify the requirements for smoke and heat detectors.

Highest level of security by multiple analysis

With the EN 54-29 standardization organizations are now setting new standards in fire alarm engineering. It specifies the requirements of fire detectors containing one sensor for smoke and one sensor for hear. These detectors spot imminent fires by means of an intelligent combination of algorithms of smoke and temperature parameters. Thanks to its multiple sensor system these detectors respond far more precisely as EN 54-5 and EN 54-7 – tested devices and they are also much less prone to deceptive interference than mere smoke detectors.

Scope of the EN-54-29

This European Standard EN 54-29 specifies requirements, test methods and performance criteria for point type multi-sensor fire detectors for use in fire detection systems installed in buildings (see EN 54-1:1996), incorporating in one mechanical enclosure at least one optical or ionization smoke sensor and at least one heat sensor. The overall fire detection performance is determined utilizing the combination of the detected phenomena. Multi-sensor fire detectors having special characteristics suitable for the detection of specific fire risks are not covered by this standard. The performance requirements for any additional functions are beyond the scope of this standard (e.g. additional features or enhanced functionality for which this standard does not define a test or assessment method).
